Apple TV+’s Invasion returns for Season 3 on August 22, 2025

You might have heard of Invasion but not realized that you were paying attention. Apple TV+’s take on the alien invasion story has so far been something of a forgotten child in the platform’s growing stable of serialized series, getting lost between the marketing juggernauts of Silo and Foundation. The premise has always had a certain flair to it, and the show has an ardent cult following, but that hasn’t stopped a mixed reception—particularly in the first half of the series—that some viewers have suggested is borne of frustration with a slow burn approach in season 1. Even many of Invasion‘s fans have long acknowledged they have a love/hate relationship with the show.

It hasn’t all been rough sailing, however, and it isn’t hard to see the appeal. The cinematography throughout has remained excellent, and the creators have set out with high aspirations to tell a big and bold story that is both cerebral and challenging, even if it hasn’t always worked as intended. Apple TV+ has shared the trailer for Season 3, and, if the first two minutes are anything to go by, the show will finally be kicking into gear.

Invasion was created by David Weil (Hunters) and Simon Kinberg, the frequent Hollywood collaborator with a resume that includes producing and writing many different X-Men films in addition to several Oscar-nominated roles as a writer and producer on The Martian. The general idea has always been intriguing, however, and I found an angle with which to stand out in an often-overcrowded genre. The story would follow an alien invasion from the perspectives of everyday people at different points across the globe, and the script combined English, Japanese, and Pashto in the dialogue to create a truly global series.

Season 1 was primarily about the beginnings of the alien presence and threat, and the mysterious creatures and their capabilities were sometimes less important than the human storylines and emotional and relationship drama that took center stage. This often frustrated those viewers who had expected a more overt alien invasion action show, but it also set the stage for a kind of sci-fi character drama that could explore the wider arc with a more personal touch.

The end of the first season put all of the pieces in place for the world to fully embrace the extraterrestrial invasion, which was done in Season 2. The sequel was a stronger chapter than its predecessor, with a far more action-heavy tone and higher stakes. The most obvious change was that the characters were no longer the focus of their storylines. The action moved from their local spaces to more epic locations, and most of them were forcibly separated at the end of Season 1 in a move that felt very extreme at the time. Humanity is driven into enclosed, heavily fortified safe zones in many places around the world, and survival is by no means guaranteed. Season 2 saw the main characters forced to adapt to their changing environment and the new world order. The show maintained the deliberate pacing, but the plot had more forward momentum, and there is an exciting sense of escalation ahead for Season 3.

Season 3 Brings Characters Together as They Plan Infiltration of Alien Mothership

Season 3 will pick up two years after the last season, and the scope of the invasion and the threat have changed in devastating new ways. From the official synopsis of the new season, we now know that the disparate character perspectives will finally converge and that the core ensemble—scattered across three continents in previous episodes—will unite for a high-stakes mission.

The aliens have also ascended, it seems, and have now reached their “apex” form. An invasive creature with tendrils is let loose and grows at an alarming rate, swiftly killing any organic material in its path. The stakes are now very clear, and it will require the combined expertise and experience of all of the survivors to protect the human race. In addition to their coming together in a single plot, the characters will form new allegiances as they prepare for this momentous mission.

The new Invasion trailer shows a darker and more focused show, as it stands on the precipice of the events of the new season. Most of the returning cast have been confirmed for the new season, including Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha Malik; Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuko Yamato; Shamier Anderson as Trevante Cole; India Brown as Jamila Hudson; Shane Zaza as the oft-loathed tech entrepreneur Nikhil Kapur; and Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans. Series regular Erika Alexander has been added to the main cast as well in a new role.

Season 3 is as much an opportunity to give viewers the cinematic scale and sense of epic storytelling that we’ve been waiting for since the series premiere as it is for the showrunners to start tying up loose threads and story arcs that have been in place since the beginning. The third season has the opportunity to fulfill the more dramatic promise of the Invasion while not losing its grounding in relatable characters and a more introspective approach.

It’s still anyone’s guess whether Invasion can win over the crowd it has lost along the way, but the feel of the trailer bodes well for the series reaching a new stage of its evolution. It appears to finally be willing to lean into some of its bombastic potential, which could be just the thing it needs to draw in a bigger crowd of new viewers. With more high stakes, emotion, and tension, Invasion may be able to cross the line from “great” to “required viewing.”
