Hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg has once again drawn the ire of progressive audiences after claiming that he cannot relate to or understand LGBTQ+ representation in children’s films, specifically Pixar’s 2022 movie Lightyear.
“So I just came to watch the movie with my grandson, and he’s like, ‘Papa Snoop, we’re going to see the light movie. Cool,” Snoop said. “He enjoyed himself. Then, in the middle of the movie, my grandson, in the middle of the movie, like, ‘Papa Snoop, how does she have a baby with a woman? She is a woman.”
“I just told him, ‘Stay with me and watch the movie, man. Let me figure it out.’ The movie ain’t over with. I’m scared to go to the movies,” he continued. “Like y’all throwing me in the middle of s— that I don’t have an answer for.”
According to Snoop, what bothered him most was that children are inquisitive and would ask questions when they see such storylines onscreen. This, Snoop Dogg says, creates a responsibility for adults to discuss and explain topics with their young children that they themselves would rather not have to talk about.
“I had no answer for him. I just told him to keep watching the movie. I thought it was going to be about Woody. I had no idea that it was some s— about two women and a baby,” Snoop Dogg said. “It threw me for a loop. These are kids that we have to show that at this age, like, they’re going to ask questions. They are going to ask. I don’t have an answer. And I was just there to go to sleep and watch the movie. That s— woke me up.”
Comments Spark Backlash, Broader Debate Over Inclusion in Films
Snoop Dogg’s inflammatory comments have been met with widespread anger on social media. In particular, since the hip-hop icon has been booked to perform at the Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final later this year, many have called for his performance to be canceled.
PinkNews reported that AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said the rapper would still be on the performance lineup despite backlash from the left. The AFL did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether it would reverse course on its decision to have Snoop Dogg perform at the championship match, but as of now, his booking still appears to be in place.
The AFL has publicly supported inclusion and diversity in recent years, including making efforts to boost the percentage of women and LGBTQ+ people who work in sports media. The sports league also committed to establishing a publicly accessible Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Panel to shape its strategy and ensure its inclusion objectives are prioritized.
Lightyear has previously come under fire for including a same-sex moment in the movie. Conservatives had previously argued that the six-second moment between two women was inappropriate for a children’s film. The controversy surrounding that moment even led Disney to temporarily pull that moment from the film before reversing course and restoring it after pushback from Pixar employees and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups.
