Christiane Amanpour’s Upcoming Departure from CNN

Christiane Amanpour, the renowned award-winning journalist and long-serving chief international anchor at CNN, has announced plans to depart the network in June 2027. The move will mark the end of an era for CNN, as Amanpour has been a prominent figure at the news network for more than four decades, starting her career there in 1983.

A Tenure Spanning Over Four Decades

Amanpour, now 68, began her CNN tenure in 1983 and quickly rose to become one of the most recognizable faces in international news. Throughout her career, she has reported from the front lines of nearly every major global conflict and crisis over the past forty years, earning widespread recognition for her fearless journalism and commitment to factual reporting.

Key Coverage and Impact on Global Journalism

During her time at CNN, Amanpour covered events including the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Bosnian War, the Persian Gulf War, the post-9/11 wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Arab Spring, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Israel’s war in Gaza. Her reporting has put her at the forefront of international news coverage, often providing in-depth analysis and first-hand accounts from global hotspots.

Notable Interviews and Journalistic Achievements

Beyond her conflict reporting, Amanpour has conducted high-profile interviews with world leaders such as former President Bill Clinton, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, and Iranian presidents Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hassan Rouhani. Her work has cemented her reputation as one of CNN’s most respected and influential correspondents, and she is recognized as an award-winning journalist within the industry.

Planned Transition and Final Programming

According to a letter from CNN chief executive Mark Thompson, Amanpour’s decision follows several months of consideration and discussion. She will begin scaling back her "Amanpour" CNN International show to once a week in early 2027. The program is scheduled to conclude in May, with Amanpour formally leaving CNN at the end of June 2027.

In a statement, Amanpour thanked the "amazingly talented people" she has worked with throughout her career, particularly her "beloved show teams and field crews." She stated, “We together battled to seek the facts, the evidence and the humanity, so that CNN could always broadcast the truth about the world and to the world, without fear nor favor.”

Organizational Changes at CNN

Amanpour’s departure comes at a time of significant change for CNN’s parent company. Just weeks ago, David Ellison’s media company Paramount Skydance completed its takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent. Mark Thompson will remain as CNN’s head, reporting directly to Skydance co-CEOs Ellison and Ynon Kreiz under the new media leadership structure.
