Officer Allegedly Assumes Identity of Deceased Man
A police officer in Lauderhill, Florida, is accused of moving into a deceased man's home, impersonating him, and using his identity for years following a welfare check in July 2022. The officer, Brian Louis Sguros, 35, faces multiple felony charges, including official misconduct and criminal use of personal identification information.
Welfare Check Leads to Alleged Crime
The events began on July 11, 2022, when Sguros responded to a welfare check at the home of Dennis West, 71, in Lauderhill. West was found dead inside his residence, and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office later determined the cause of death to be natural.
Police Accuse Officer of Residential Impersonation and Renovation
Investigators allege that weeks after West’s death, Sguros took possession of West's home. According to paperwork he filed, Sguros moved in during August 2022—a timeline that aligns with authorities' findings. He is further accused of renovating the property and continuing to live there under West’s identity.
Official Misconduct and Identity Theft Charges Filed
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office stated that Sguros presented himself to the county medical examiner’s office as a friend of West, though there was no evidence they previously knew one another. Sguros allegedly told officials West had no living relatives, which was found to be untrue. Authorities say Sguros used West’s identification to pay taxes and utilities, applied for a home renovation permit in West’s name, and forged his signature on that permit application.
Alleged Use of Law Enforcement Resources
Further claims include that Sguros, then employed by the Lauderhill Police Department, used law enforcement computer databases to access personal information about Dennis West. These actions led to additional charges of offense against a computer user and unlawful use of a two-way communication device. His reported actions encompassed both residential impersonation and official misconduct.
Legal Proceedings and Department Response
Sguros was arrested on Tuesday and appeared in court the following day, where he was ordered held on a $25,000 bond, according to NBC South Florida reports. In response to his arrest, the Lauderhill Police Department placed him on administrative leave without pay. As of the latest reports, it is unclear whether Sguros has retained legal counsel.
