Shawn Oliver Arrested Following New Bedford Crash
Shawn Oliver, a member of the New Bedford City Council and Republican candidate for Massachusetts lieutenant governor, has suspended his campaign after being arrested late Saturday night on multiple charges related to a car accident.
Details of the Incident and Arrest
The crash occurred around 11:40 p.m. on Dartmouth Street in New Bedford. According to police, Oliver's SUV overturned and collided with several parked cars, involving a total of five vehicles, two of which sustained heavy damage. Following the accident, Oliver was taken to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment. Authorities arrested him after conducting an investigation both at the scene and the hospital.
Oliver faces charges including operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, and speeding. The incident drew significant attention given Oliver's candidacy for lieutenant governor on the Republican ticket.
Republican Ticket Impact and Campaign Suspension
Oliver was running alongside Mike Minogue as part of the Republican ticket for the upcoming state election, set for November 3, 2026. In a statement released Sunday, Minogue expressed disappointment and called for Oliver to suspend his campaign, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations. "I am extremely disappointed. Shawn is lucky to be alive and lucky that no one innocent was hurt. There is no excuse for driving under the influence," Minogue said.
He added that, after speaking with Oliver, he would ask for Oliver's resignation if elected, emphasizing the need for Oliver to focus on personal matters and his family.
Oliver’s Statement and Uncertainty for Election
Oliver later issued a statement confirming the suspension of his campaign for lieutenant governor. He noted, "This election is too important to be overshadowed by personal matters. I want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported me throughout this journey and ask that my family's privacy be respected during this difficult time."
The future of the Republican ticket remains unclear with just over two weeks remaining before the election.
Responses from Massachusetts GOP and Local Leaders
Amy Carnevale, spokesperson for the Massachusetts Republican Party, expressed support for Oliver's decision to end his campaign. She stated, "The MassGOP supports the decision of Shawn Oliver to suspend his campaign for Lieutenant Governor. Lives were put at risk and that is never acceptable." Carnevale added the party’s willingness to assist Oliver in seeking help, and acknowledged his accountability for the situation.
New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell, a Democrat, described the incident as "deeply concerning." There has been no comment from the campaign of incumbent Governor Maura Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, who are running against the Republican ticket.
Looking Ahead to the 2026 Election
With Election Day scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, the Massachusetts Republican Party faces questions about the state of its ticket following Oliver’s suspension. Law enforcement’s response and the political ramifications continue to unfold as the election approaches.
